Dunwich Dynamo XXIV, 16-17 July 2016

Nothing much has changed from last year, so I've changed the date and left everything else as-is.  I checked the route and routesheet last year and it was all fine  :)

The Dynamo, The DunRun, The DD, whatever you like to call it, is a 180km ride from London Fields in Hackney, north London, across Essex and Suffolk to the lost city of Dunwich on the Suffolk coast.  There's a pub there now.  This is a turn-up-and-ride event, no need to enter, unless you're riding it as an audax DIY.

The ride takes place on the first weekend nearest to a full moon in July every year, and starts at 8pm — in the evening — on the Saturday.  For the weak and weary there are coaches (must be pre-booked) and trains (limited access for non-folding bikes); for everyone else there's the opportunity to ride back to the start.

There's a brief discussion on it on yacf here, and also some more official information here, as well as Road CC's write-up here.

Since I live in Cambridge, I've put together a 400km DIY-by-GPS route from Girton Golf Club (near where I live) to London to Dunwich and back to Girton Golf Club.  The return from Dunwich actually uses half of my Cambridge Market 200 perm route.

Route sheet

I've created a route sheet based on what I believe to be the correct DD route.  However, the route is open to interpretation and I have a question about the exact route out of Framlingham after the hill is climbed — it's no problem, it's either one or the other and they join back together after a couple of miles — in 2015 the "proper" route was to stay on the main road for a couple of miles before L @ [x] and then R @ X — there are a couple of pop-ups that you'd miss otherwise.

I've also created route sheets to get from Girton, Cambridge, to London Fields, and back from Dunwich:

I rode this route as a 400km DIY last year (2015) and it was all fine.

GPS files

I've created some GPS files — ones of the DD route itself, and ones to get from Cambridge to London and back to Cambridge from Dunmow.  Choose your format: GPX or TCX as follows …

Preamble

Some devices can only handle GPX files; some devices need simplified (500-point) GPX files.  Some devices can't handle more than 200km in a single route, some riders prefer TCX — it's somewhat of a minefield trying to provide GPS files to suit all-comers!  I've sliced and diced the most common formats and you should find something here for your device, whatever your requirements.  If you'd prefer to grab an online copy and modify it yourself, the originals are here and you can duplicate to your own RWGPS account and play.

If you're still having problems or have a question, email Nick.

Standard GPX files

Most riders will use these normal GPX files.  There are two flavours: standard and legacy (reduced-to-500-points for legacy devices).  The controls are included as waypoints (unless indicated).  Garmin Edge 700+ devices and most other non-Garmin devices use these.

Also, if you're riding from Cambridge to London and back to Cambridge from Dunwich then you'll need both of these also:

Legacy 500-point GPX

These are for users of Garmin eTrex, Montana and Edge 500 and the like.

Also, if you're riding from Cambridge to London and back to Cambridge from Dunwich then you'll need both of these also:

Even simpler legacy 500-point GPX

If you want even simpler GPX for Garmin Edge 200 and the most basic other devices, without any waypoints, use these

Also, if you're riding from Cambridge to London and back to Cambridge from Dunwich then you'll need both of these also:

‘Advanced’ TCX files

TCX routes work on devices like Edge 800, 810, 1000 and possibly others.

Also, if you're riding from Cambridge to London and back to Cambridge from Dunwich then you'll need both of these also:

Turning it into a nice 400km ride from Cambridge (and back)

The controls for the purpose of DIY-by-GPS are:

You can ignore the above if you aren't riding this as an audax ride.
